Miami University Alumni Colleen (Conner) Hopkins ‘08 received a Teacher Excellence Award this year.

Miami University Alumni Colleen (Connor) Hopkins ‘08, is one of twenty-four outstanding educators from Success Academy Charter Schools in New York to receive a Teacher Excellence Award this year. She was recognized for her exceptional ability to raise student achievement and model best practices. The winners of the award were nominated by their principals and selected from among nearly 1,000 teachers across the network’s 32 schools to serve as role models of what a good teacher should be. Principals identified nominees who not only embodied qualities such as student engagement, intellectual preparation, and feedback, but also whose work with students was exemplary.

Colleen is a special education teacher at Success Academy Upper West and a graduate of Miami University of Ohio (Class of 2008). “Colleen is constantly seeking out additional scholars who are struggling academically to add to her caseload so that they, too, can benefit from her support,” says Jennifer Haynes, principal of Upper West. Principal Haynes describes Colleen as a leader among her colleagues, frequently helping her fellow teachers who turn to her for advice on reaching struggling students or those with special needs. Colleen’s hard work yields tremendous results for her scholars–this year, almost all of her students met end-of-year benchmarks in reading and math.
