EHS’s First Challenge of Miami’s Year of Creativity and Innovation

ehs-innovation-box-2“This is not just a box, it is a Not-A-Box,” Denise Taliaferro Baszile, Associate Dean for Student Services and Diversity at Miami University College of Education, Health and Society told her audience of college faculty and staff members at the Community Meeting.ehs-innovation-box-9

After presenting the children’s book Not a Box, written and illustrated by Antoinette Portis, she challenged everyone in the room to create a Not a Box of their own–to think outside the box. Earlier that day, she challenged incoming freshmen, and later upperclassmen, to do the same with a square piece of paper.

The exercise was twofold. First, as part of Miami University’s Year of Creativity and Innovation, The College of Education, Health and Society wanted to contribute to team building and community in the division through the creation of new out of the ordinary. Second, the boxes served as an application for a student, faculty, and staff creativity group slated to meet throughout the year.

The creations are on display in the ehs-innovation-box-13Dean’s office in McGuffey Hall as well as the lobby of Phillips Hall. More exciting creativity and innovation challenges are planned for the rest of the school year.
